With reference,to your letters No. 72848/30 of 12th June and 6th October 1930, on the subject of the repatriation of ex-soldiers who leave the Colours whilst serving at stations abroad to take up local civil employment, I am commanded by the Army Council to state for the information of Lord Passfield that approval has been given for the provision of free passages to the United Kingdom for soldiers whose terms of service expire whilst serving at Imperial Stations abroad who, having entered into local employment immediately on discharge or transfer to the Army Reserve, may become unemployed within a period of five years from the date of their discharge or transfer to the Army Reserve.
I am to say that this sanction is given on the understanding that the repatriation will be deferred, both for the ex-soldier, and his family, if any, until a transport or freightship becomes available, and that no contribution to the cost of maintenance of the ex-soldier or his family during the interval shall fall on Army Funds.
I am to add that it is not intended that soldiers who have taken their discharge abroad before 20th November 1930 shall normally be regarded as eligible for passages under the scheme, but special cases may be referred to the Army Council for considera tion.
